BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide composed of fifteen amino acid residues, with the sequence Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val. Its name derives from body protection compound, a term used for a protein fraction identified in human gastric juice. Researchers in Zagreb first reported the pentadecapeptide in the early 1990s and described it as a stable fragment of that larger protein. The compound is also catalogued as PL 14736 and, in some commercial contexts, as bepecin. Its molecular formula is C62H98N16O22 and its monoisotopic mass is approximately 1419 daltons.
Most published work on BPC-157 consists of preclinical studies, including rodent models of tissue injury, gastrointestinal lesions, and vascular or tendon damage, together with in vitro cell assays. Reviews frequently note that the mechanisms proposed in these papers remain incompletely characterised and that findings have not been confirmed in large randomised human trials. The compound is widely sold as a research chemical rather than a licensed medicine, and labels commonly carry a statement that it is not for human use. Whether any of the reported animal effects translate to humans is an open question rather than an established result.
Identity and purity are usually assessed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, which separates the target peptide from truncated sequences and other synthesis by-products. Mass spectrometry, typically electrospray ionization coupled to liquid chromatography, confirms the expected mass and helps detect modifications. Amino acid analysis can verify composition when residue-level confirmation is needed. Because common impurities differ from the target by only one or two residues, chromatographic resolution often matters more than a single headline purity percentage. Impurity profiles are most informative when compared against a validated reference standard.
Lyophilized material is generally reported as stable for extended periods when kept cold, dry, and protected from light. In solution, the main degradation routes for a peptide of this type are hydrolysis of peptide bonds and aggregation. The sequence contains no cysteine, so disulfide-driven oxidation is not a primary concern, though methionine and tryptophan are also absent. Stability depends on pH, buffer composition, and concentration, with acidic conditions often reported as more favorable than neutral or alkaline ones. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles can promote aggregation, and how fast degradation proceeds at room temperature in specific formulations remains an open question.

In its usual supplied form, the peptide is a white to off-white lyophilized powder that dissolves readily in water and in aqueous buffers. Powder keeps far longer than solution, so material is normally shipped and stored dry, then dissolved only when needed. Once in solution, the chain is subject to hydrolysis and the liquid supports microbial growth, and practical guidance generally treats the dissolved form as short-lived. Containers should stay sealed and desiccated, because the powder takes up moisture from air.
Long-term storage of the dry powder is typically described at minus twenty degrees Celsius or colder, while shorter holding periods may use ordinary refrigeration. Repeated warming and cooling cycles are discouraged because they stress the material and can promote aggregation or loss. Light exposure and residual moisture are both treated as avoidable sources of degradation, and working aliquots are often prepared to limit how many times a container is opened. Sealed vials with a desiccant are the usual container.
A freeze-dried sample is generally the most stable form and is commonly held at minus twenty degrees Celsius or lower for long-term keeping, with brief transfers at room temperature. The solid is hygroscopic, so vials are warmed to ambient temperature before opening to prevent condensation from degrading the contents. Light exposure and repeated temperature cycling are both avoided in routine handling. Storage over a desiccant is a common laboratory practice that limits moisture uptake during repeated access.
Once dissolved, the material is considerably less stable than the dry solid. Aqueous solutions are usually kept cold and used within a short window, and neutral or mildly acidic buffers are preferred over strongly alkaline conditions. Freeze-thaw cycles promote aggregation and loss of material to container surfaces, so dividing a batch into single-use aliquots is standard. Adsorption to plastic and glass can lower the measured concentration, meaning solution strength may need rechecking before an experiment.
Reposado may be rested in oak barrels or casks as large as 20,000 litres (5,280 US gallons), allowing for richer and more complex flavors. The preferred oak comes from the US, France, or Canada, and is usually white oak. Some companies char the wood to impart a smoky flavor or use barrels previously used with different kinds of alcohol (e.g. whiskey or wine). Some reposados can also be aged in new wood barrels to achieve the same woody flavor and smoothness, but in less time. Añejos are often rested in barrels previously used to rest reposados. The barrels cannot be more than 600 litres (160 US gal), and most are in the 200 litres (53 US gal) range. Many of the barrels used are from whiskey distilleries in the US or Canada, and Jack Daniel's barrels are especially popular. This treatment creates many of the aspects of the dark color and more complex flavors of the añejo tequila. After aging of at least one year, the añejo can be removed from the wood barrels and placed in stainless steel tanks to reduce the amount of evaporation that can occur in the barrels.
== History == MIKES was developed at Purdue University in 1973 by Beynon, Cooks, J. W. Amy, W. E. Baitinger, and T. Y. Ridley. MIKES was invented because researches at Purdue and Cornell thought that if the parent ion was mass-selected before the dissociation and mass analysis of the products by the electric sector it would be easier to study the metastable ions and the collision-induced dissociation (CID). This was an achievement because it combined the utility of previous instruments such as the ion kinetic energy spectrometer with the ability to mass select precursor ions. That precursor ion is mass selected with the magnetic sector. The dissociation products are then mass analyzed using the electric sector. "The peak shapes revealed from the electric sector scan can provide information on the kinetic energy release from in the course of fragmentation and on the kinetic energy uptake in the course of ionic collision processes." The dispersion of velocities due to kinetic energy release leads to the characteristic wide metastable peaks observed using MIKES techniques.
=== 19 February === Six people were killed by RSF shelling in Omdurman. The SAF claimed to have retaken the El Hurriya Bridge in central Khartoum, as well as Sidra in North Kordofan. The United Nations confirmed a state of famine in the Zamzam, Abu Shouk and Al Salam IDP camps in North Darfur, as well as in two locations in the Western Nuba Mountains.

Commodore Tim Hare, former Director of Nuclear Policy at the British Ministry of Defence, has described "sub-strategic use" as offering the Government "an extra option in the escalatory process before it goes for an all-out strategic strike which would deliver unacceptable damage". However, this sub-strategic capacity has been criticized as potentially increasing the "acceptability" of using nuclear weapons. Combined with the trend in the reduction in the worldwide nuclear arsenal as of 2007 is the warhead miniaturization and modernization of the remaining strategic weapons that is presently occurring in all the declared nuclear weapon states, into more "usable" configurations. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute suggests that this is creating a culture where use of these weapons is more acceptable and therefore is increasing the risk of war, as these modern weapons do not possess the same psychological deterrent value as the large Cold-War era, multi-megaton warheads. In many ways, this present change in the balance of terror can be seen as the complete embracement of the switch from the 1950s Eisenhower doctrine of "massive retaliation" to one of "flexible response", which has been growing in importance in the US nuclear war fighting plan/SIOP every decade since. For example, the United States adopted a policy in 1996 of allowing the targeting of its nuclear weapons at non-state actors ("terrorists") armed with weapons of mass destruction.
The escalation in the price of oil in 1974 increased the cost of the Western world's energy tenfold. In response, the U.S. government promoted the production of gasohol, gasoline with 10 percent alcohol added, as an answer to the energy crisis. In 1979, when the Soviet Union sent troops to Afghanistan, the Carter administration cut off its supplies to agricultural produce in retaliation, creating a surplus of agriculture in the U.S. As a result, fermenting the agricultural surpluses to synthesize fuel seemed to be an economical solution to the shortage of oil threatened by the Iran–Iraq War. Before the new direction could be taken, however, the political wind changed again: the Reagan administration came to power in January 1981 and, with the declining oil prices of the 1980s, ended support for the gasohol industry before it was born. Biotechnology seemed to be the solution for major social problems, including world hunger and energy crises. In the 1960s, radical measures would be needed to meet world starvation, and biotechnology seemed to provide an answer. However, the solutions proved to be too expensive and socially unacceptable, and solving world hunger through SCP food was dismissed. In the 1970s, the food crisis was succeeded by the energy crisis, and here too, biotechnology seemed to provide an answer. But once again, costs proved prohibitive as oil prices slumped in the 1980s. Thus, in practice, the implications of biotechnology were not fully realized in these situations. But this would soon change with the rise of genetic engineering.

BPC-157 is a synthetic fifteen-amino-acid peptide whose sequence corresponds to a fragment of a protein found in human gastric juice. It is studied mainly in preclinical research and is not an approved pharmaceutical product in major markets. Materials sold for laboratory use are typically labelled as research chemicals.
No medicines regulator in the United States or the European Union has approved BPC-157 as a therapeutic product. Presenting it as a drug or as a dietary supplement ingredient would generally not match its regulatory status. Availability as a research chemical does not imply clinical approval.
Published reports rest largely on animal models and cell culture rather than controlled human trials. Review articles describe the proposed mechanisms as incompletely understood. Conclusions about effects in humans therefore remain tentative.
Reversed-phase liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection gives a purity estimate, while mass spectrometry confirms molecular mass and flags modifications. Amino acid analysis can add compositional confirmation. Results are most meaningful when a validated reference standard is run alongside the sample.
